Immigration lawyer Charly Salkazanov spoke with a dozen of us via Zoom on January 21, 2025, about France’s immigration and asylum processes– a hot topic in today’s global political landscape.
France does not have sufficient staff to handle the volume of applications by those seeking to enter the country legally or who want to appeal an order to leave French territory. Lacking a mediation process, immigration and expulsion cases go directly to court, creating another backlog. Coupled with increasingly restrictive visa requirements, this process makes immigration significantly more complicated, he opined.
Salkazanov also said he was concerned that Donald Trump’s withdrawal of the US from such international organizations as the Paris Climate Accord and the WHO creates an atmosphere of disrespect for international laws and conventions put in place following World War II, which will also impact immigration policies globally.
